MA top 50 Gastro Pubs 2010
On the 15th of November the winners of the Morning Advertiser’s “Old Speckled Hen” Top 50 Gastropubs 2010 special awards were announced at a lunch at the Olde Bell, Hurley Berkshire.
Thousands of pubs were entered into these awards, the highest number of entrants ever; making it a huge achievement to reach a listing status in the Top 50!
Enterprise Inns are thrilled that nine pubs have been recognised among the top 50 gastro pubs in the UK! A true testament to how hard the licensees are working in these difficult times.
Listed 4th
Harwood Arms, Fulham, London, Owners; Brett Graham, Mike Robinson and Edwin Vaux. Head Chef is Stephen Williams. The Harwood Arms was the first pub in London to be awarded a Michelin star, gained in January. Business Innovation includes creating a Bar Snack Menu that captures passing trade and is an alternative to their À la carte menu.

The Bay Horse, Hurworth-on-Tees, Darlington, Durham. Licensees; Jonathan Hall and Marcus Bennett. Head Chef Marcus Bennett. They have achieved serving top restaurant food but with a pub atmosphere, whilst also offering an outside catering service. Business Innovations include the addition of a second private dining room.

The Albion, Clifton, Bristol. Licensee Owain George. Head Chef Clarke Oldfield. Their passion for locally sourced products extends to foraging for mushrooms. Home baked bread, jams and chutneys make up a deli section in the pub. Business Innovation, whisky and food-matching dinners.

Anglesea Arms, Hammersmith, West London. Licensees Jill O’Sullivan and Michael Mann. Head Chef Matt Cranston. A Georgian corner pub with wooden floors and traditional British dishes sourced from the local area. Winter warmers include mulled wine and hot spiced apple syrup. Business Innovations; developing wine list and taking dinner reservations by telephone to cut down on congestion.

The Potting Shed, Crudwell, Wiltshire. Licensees; Jonathan Barry and Julian Muggridge. Head Chef Daniel Wyatt. Grow all their herbs, vegetables and fruit in an allotment behind the pub. They have given over ten allotment beds to the village to encourage locals to buy local seasonal food. Business Innovation; to extend The Potting Shed concept to a second site.

The Thomas Lord, West Meon, Hampshire. Licensee Richard Taylor. Head Chef Garath Longhurst. The pub is named after professional cricketer Thomas Lord and is believed to be the only British pub with this name. Richard Taylor is a keen landscape gardener growing vegetables, herbs and flowers to use in the pub’s cuisine. Business Innovations, a stone-baked pizza oven was rebuilt, and the pub have created a strong link with a local theatre group who put on regular performances in the grounds.

The Cricket Inn, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Owner, Brew Kitchen. Head Chef Marco Caines. The pub introduced big sharing boards for Sunday lunch with extra Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes or another jug of gravy. Business Innovations. Plan to work on interacting with the community more and maybe make some alterations to the kitchen to be ahead of the game.

Earl of March, Lavant, Chichester, West Sussex. Licensee and chef Giles Thompson. Head Chef Ben Eve. Their Seafood and Champagne shack, during the summer months, transforms into a game shack in the winter during the game season. Business innovations; created a morning refreshment menu during the summer festival weeks held at nearby Goodwood Estate. Intend on providing cookery demonstrations at food festivals hosted by West Dean Collage.

Canton Arms, Stockwell, London. Owner Charlie Bousfield. Head Chef Trish Hilferty. The pub is a co-production between the team involved in the Anchor & Hope in Waterloo and the Great Queen Street in Covent Garden. Business Innovations, created ‘sharing dishes,’ traditional hearty food The dishes are served whole with a sharp knife for diners to get stuck into.

Lord Nelson, Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire, part of Moleface Pub Company. Managing Director John Molnar converted an outbuilding into a pizzeria with British pizza toppings as their speciality for eating in or taking out. Also home-made ice creams with flavours including apple crumble and custard, jam roly-poly and treacle tart. Weekly gourmet pizza specials like rabbit and truffle oil and Gourmet pizza and wine-tasting nights.
MA Gastro Pub Chef of the year 2010
Marcus Bennett Head Chef of The Bay Horse, Hurworth-on-tees, Darlington, Durham. Marcus bakes his own speciality breads including pumpkin and carrot or date and pistachio, that compliment dishes like slow braised duabe of beef, potted Whitby crab, beef bourguignon and coq au vin.
