Getting started

We want to ensure that you are as prepared as possible for running your pub business, whether new to the industry or taking on another pub.

There are some essential training courses that you must complete before you embark on your journey to running a successful pub business with Enterprise.

Pre-Entry Awareness Training (PEAT)

*Compulsory for those who have not held a tenancy or lease before

Run by the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), this course is available online, and takes around two hours to complete. This course identifies the key things you need to consider before signing a pub tenancy or lease agreement.

Personal Licence

*Required by anyone who sells or authorises the sale of alcohol to the public

Anyone who sells or authorises the sale of alcohol to the public in England or Wales is legally obliged to hold a Personal Licence. To obtain a Personal Licence, you will need to apply to your local authority.

In supporting your application for a Licence, you must prove that you hold a government-approved licensing qualification such as the Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH).

Building Your Business (BYB)

Our bespoke Building Your Business Programme (BYB) is compulsory for those taking an Enterprise lease or tenancy and includes everything a Publican needs to run a successful business as well as obtaining industry qualifications. This course has been developed by industry experts to help you understand more about running a business in your own way before you invest in a property.

Growing your business

Once you have signed your agreement, it is time to put your plans in place and run your business.

From day one, you will have access to our award-winning range of support packages and free training for you and your staff.

Our training workshops have been specifically developed to help give you and your staff the skills and confidence for you to grow your business in your own way. They also provide a great opportunity to network with other Publicans and seek advice from our specialist trainers.

Winning in a Local Market Area (WILMA)

WILMA is our innovative business development programme, designed to provide you with a solid foundation on which to identify a route to a competitive advantage and growing your business.

This course is a one-day workshop with practical examples for you to take away and use in your business.

Food Retailing, Education and Development (FRED)

Pub food now represents approximately 30% of all pub sales, so a food offering is becoming increasingly important. This one-day workshop places importance on developing new or unique menu offerings and gives you the knowledge and tools to implement this.

Ways of Winning (WOW)

This one-day workshop has been designed to help you to identify ways to promote and market your business in the most cost-effective way. It will enable you to plan the implementation of your marketing strategy and develop the key marketing messages of your business.

Profit Through People

This course aims to develop the skills and processes that will enable you to consistently get the best out of your team and improve your overall business performance. A one-day course, the focus is on establishing the key ways in which you and your team can consistently exceed customers’ expectations and maximise efficiency.

Specialist courses

Some of our courses on offer provide specialist training for those Publicans looking to get a step ahead of their competition.

Given their specialist nature, there may be a small fee for these courses.
