Carbon Management - The Pub Estate

Enterprise Inns has established an Environmental Impact Committee with a view to reviewing strategy and implementing policies to deliver high quality energy services to our pubs, including:

  • continued promotion of cellar cooling maintenance contracts under which our publicans are able to utilise highly energy efficient cellar cooling equipment and to target the replacement of 10% of inefficient cellar cooling equipment each year to ensure optimal energy performance.  There are currently 4550 pubs on these contracts.
  • Partnering with Convert 2 Green to recycle used cooking oil. During the Financial year ending Sept 2009 our partner collected 35000 litres of used cooking from Enterprise Inns Pubs – this is the equivalent savings of 75metric tonnes of CO2. For the next financial year, we will continue to promote this initiative to our publicans, formulate a set of  targets for carbon savings year on year and measure performance against the same.
  • During 2009, we introduced a heating and boiler maintenance service and replacement scheme. Our publicans are able to utilise the benefits of this service which offers a highly energy efficient condensing boilers and controls system. The target for replacement of boilers under the scheme is 10% year on year. The targeted replacement programme is due to commence early in 2010. This is partnered with Bosch Thermotechnology (Worcester and Buderus) Ltd.
  • Continue to promote best practice identified by individual publicans in our Estate through our publican magazine Eagle Eye
  • Continue to focus on piloting and incorporating new technologies to ensure optimum energy performance of lighting, heating and boiler and cellar cooling equipment in addition to a growing number of simple energy saving devices.

Enterprise Inns has adopted the Carbon Trust’s 5-Step Carbon Management approach across its operations, including our head office and the pub estate to accelerate the integration of carbon issues throughout the Group and address our short, medium and long term climate impacts. We have implemented a range of measures focused on our most energy intensive activities including:

  • the piloting of an energy efficient refurbishment programme in the pub estate, whereby a range of energy efficiency upgrades (primarily to boilers and lighting) will be delivered through our existing supply chains, delivering significant energy savings. This will encompass:

                 - training of employees and supply chain partners;
                 - implementation and integration of innovative energy efficiency model specifications;
                 - pre and post implementation monitoring of performance
                 - an awareness campaign to all publicans

  • launching and promoting to our publicans an advanced maintenance contract for heating and boiler installations in the pub estate, including extensive maintenance to deliver improved energy efficiency (e.g. efficiency checks, descaling of hot water heating elements) and to ensure that the installation of all new mechanical plant carries the green flag efficiency mark to reduce wasted energy use;
  • providing advice to publicans on most beneficial energy contracts through an energy broker who is also tasked to provide  energy reporting methods to the pub estate and promote energy consciousness and efficiency amongst our licensees;
  • the consideration of a focused awareness programme targeting our publicans who will be able to choose from a range of energy saving improvements for their pub and become involved in their implementation; and
  • undertaking ongoing audits of the pub estate to accurately measure energy efficiency savings and to monitor and report the progress of the above mentioned initiatives.

During the year ended 30 December 2008, and in accordance with our obligations under the Packaging Waste Regulations, our Compliance Manager recycled approximately 4,492 metric tonnes of glass, paper, plastic and metals used in the pub estate by our publicans.
